Building a Morning Routine When You Hate Mornings

Luxen Team

The internet is flooded with advice from self-proclaimed "morning people" telling you to wake up at 4:30 AM, take an ice bath, and run 5 miles before sunrise.

If you hate mornings, this advice is not just unhelpful; it's actively discouraging. You don't have to be a morning person to have a great morning routine. Here is how to build one.

1. Stop Fighting Your Chronotype

Your chronotype (whether you are a natural early bird or night owl) is largely genetic. If you naturally function better at night, forcing a 5 AM wakeup will only result in sleep deprivation and misery.

Determine your natural wake time (e.g., 7:30 AM) and build your routine around that, rather than an arbitrary hour.

2. The Low-Friction Start

When you hate mornings, any difficult task will make you want to crawl back into bed. Your first 20 minutes must be incredibly low-friction.

Do not plan a high-intensity workout or a deep journaling session immediately. Instead, plan something gentle and highly rewarding:

3. Outsource Your Willpower

Because you are groggy, you cannot rely on willpower to stay off your phone. This is where technology works in your favor.

Use an app like Luxen to schedule a morning lock. If your distracting apps are inaccessible, the temptation to stay in bed and scroll is removed. You outsource the discipline to the app, allowing you to focus purely on executing your gentle routine.

4. Prepare the Night Before

A good morning starts the night before. If you wake up and have to make 10 decisions (what to wear, what to eat, where your keys are), your brain will be exhausted before you start work.

Lay out your clothes, prep your coffee maker, and pack your bag before you go to sleep.

Make the morning as mindless and pleasant as possible.
